Apply for research and development funding

The Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development, known as FP7, is the European Union’s main source of funding for research.

Your business may be eligible to receive up to 50 per cent of research and development costs. Small to medium sized enterprises (SMEs) could qualify for up to 75 per cent of research and development costs.

FP7 funding can help your organisation to:

share the cost and risk of product, process or service development;
develop existing or emerging fields and markets;
nurture business relationships and encourage pan-European networking; and
access leading-edge technology and share expertise.
What is FP7?
FP7 is the European Union’s new €50.5 billion research and development programme. Substantial grants are available to part fund a wide range of projects, in all industries and market sectors.

Learn more about FP7 from the FP7UK website

Eligibility
FP7 funded projects should involve a new technological initiative which can be developed into a new product, process or service. Projects usually have a time to market of two to four years.

Share resources and expertise
Projects tend to be collaborative and encourage European organisations to share their resources and expertise to make technological advances. FP7 initiatives are an effective way of engaging with leading players and industry networks within your field, and ultimately enhancing commercial success.

There are opportunities for companies of all sizes whether in the role of developer, supplier or end-user. You can apply for funding for an innovative project or share your expertise and, in return, gain access to new technologies. Universities, research institutes, trade associations and public sector agencies can also take part.

In addition to collaborative research, there are opportunities to participate in activities such as networking, studies, conferences and training.
